Choosing an EB-5 Regional Center
With such a growing demand in the EB-5 program as the preferred method of obtaining permanent U.S. residence through investment, the number of approved EB-5 Regional Centers in the United States is in the hundreds. Choosing the safest and most suitable Regional Center is one of the most important steps in the EB-5 process.
The EB-5 visa allows the foreign applicant, the applicant’s spouse and their unmarried children under the age of 21 to achieve permanent U.S. residence by way of business investment. Choosing an approved and designated Regional Center requires an investment of at least $500,000 and can be a tedious task with over 100 different Regional Centers ranging from farms to resorts. The important determinant is whether the EB-5 project will create or preserve at least 10 full time jobs which is the main objective of the program.
Depending on the Regional Center to provide all the details and offer guidance is not the smartest choice. The center wants foreign investments at any cost even if they have not disclosed the risk factors to the potential investor; approaching a Regional Center is naïve to say the least.
Solely relying on advice from attorneys on what Regional Center to choose can often times be unfavorable. Immigration attorneys, in most cases, are not EB-5 specialists and if an attorney should choose to guide you to a particular Regional Center it could create a conflict of interest if the attorney is being paid by you and the Regional Center.
Hiring an EB-5 consultant can be a risky business too. It is important to check the firm’s background and experience. There are many consulting firms that claim to have been in business for many years but have only had a handful of clients. Background checks on both the firm and the consultant are a top priority.
There are prospect EB-5 investors out there who use the internet and blogs to make their decision. However, careful examination of the website is extremely important. Anyone can post information on the internet and validity of the information should be always be researched before a decision is made.
