EB-5 visa program tour in China reveals motivations for investment
A recent tour promoting the EB-5 visa program in China has revealed many Chinese investors' motivations in taking advantage of the EB-5 investment opportunity, reports Abu Dhabi's The National.
The EB-5 visa program allows foreign nationals whose investment of $1 million ($500,000 in certain regions) in an American company creates or preserves 10 jobs to earn their green card eligibility.
The investments being promoted on the tour offer no interest – typical EB-5 programs carry interest rates of 2.5 to 2.75 percent, according to the source – but enthusiasm for the program among potential Chinese investors centers on other factors.
"The Chinese family wants its children to excel. There are certain ceilings along the way… locally that make it difficult to succeed. Most of the investors are interested in emigrating to the U.S. for education purposes," Gregg Hayden, general manager of the New York City Regional Center, told the source.
An anonymous potential Chinese investor indicated another potential motivation for participation in the program: political liberty. "[My son] can grow up freely there," he told the news source.
