Saipan governor to follow up with USCIS on EB-5 regional center proposalBenigno R. Fitial, the governor of Saipan, which is the largest island of the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), said recently that he plans to follow up with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on obtaining EB-5 regional center status for the islands, the Saipan Tribune reports.

Fitial said that the private company of a former Commerce secretary has already submitted the EB-5 regional center application.

The federal EB-5 visa program is a way for foreign nationals to obtain U.S. green card eligibility by making an investment of $1 million (or $500,000 in some areas) in an American company or project that either creates or maintains at least 10 full-time jobs.

An EB-5 regional center is defined by the USCIS as "any economic unit, public or private, which is involved with the promotion of economic growth, improved regional productivity, job creation, and increased domestic capital investment."

Currently, there are more than 135 EB-5 regional centers across the U.S., according to the USCIS.
