Vermont governor brings in EB-5 investors on the cheap
Recently, several governors have come under fire for the amount of taxpayer money they spend on travel. However, Vermont’s governor has a strong record of being fiscally responsible while traveling abroad, sometimes to find investors for the EB-5 visa program.
When governor Jim Douglas traveled he flew in coach and rarely billed the state for his meals, according to Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Douglas is aware of his frugality when on the taxpayers’ dime, proclaiming to the news source, “I’m a cheapskate.”
If one combines Douglas’ thriftiness with the amount of EB-5 investments he says he has brought to the state, it appears that the governor has been using the state’s money wisely.
Douglas says that his trips to the Far East have brought in $40 million in commitments to Vermont through the EB-5 visa program, which allows foreign nationals to become eligible for U.S. green cards if they invest $1 million in an American business and 10 jobs are created as a result of that investment.
Residents of the Green Mountain State may be able to rest easier knowing that their governor is using their money wisely when presenting foreign nationals with EB-5 investment opportunities.
