Bill proposed in Arizona could require hospitals to check immigration status of patientsAfter enacting some of the most controversial immigration enforcement legislation last year, some state lawmakers are looking to add a new bill that would require hospitals to check patients' citizenship statuses, reports KPHO.com, a CBS affiliate in Phoenix.

If the bill, known as SB 1405, ultimately passes, hospitals would need to check the immigration status after they administer any form of emergency medical care, the news source said. If the patient is not in the U.S. legally, they would then reportedly be handed over to immigration officials.

While those favoring the bill argue that hospitals should not be caring for those who are in the country illegally, one undocumented immigrant told the news source that those like herself would have to reconsider receiving medical attention in even serious instances.

"A lot of people will get sick and they could even die," she told the news source, adding "I would be scared, I would be scared to be separated from loved ones that we have here so it's not fair that they're trying to pass that."

Whether or not this new immigration reform bill is passed in Arizona, foreigners can still become eligible to obtain a U.S. green card through the federal EB-5 visa program if they invest $1 million (or $500,000 in some areas) in an American project or company that either creates or maintains at least 10 full-time jobs.
