Immigration an important part of California governor's raceImmigration has been a hot topic in the lead up to the fast-approaching elections, and California's race to the governor's mansion is no exception.

Republican candidate Meg Whitman claims that her Democratic counterpart Jerry Brown has been lying about her stances on immigration, according to the Associated Press.

Specifically, Whitman said that Brown claimed she supported Arizona's controversial immigration law, which would have required that police officers inquire about a person's immigration status if they suspect that a person is in the country unlawfully.

"He is saying that I am for the Arizona law. It's a bold-faced lie," Whitman said after meeting with Latino metal workers in South Los Angeles.

"I have been so firm on this," she added. "It makes me mad he is just out there telling lies."

Brown had accused Whitman of trying to play both sides in the immigration discussion during a debate earlier this month.

"As far as the Arizona law, she's says the Arizona law is OK for Arizona. So she's for the Arizona law for the people who are suffering right now, the people who are cleaners in Arizona," Brown said. "Here in California where they're not proposing the law, she says it doesn't apply here."

Regardless of the elections, foreign nationals can become lawful permanent residents of the U.S. through the EB-5 visa program.
