Immigration reform may be on the horizonComprehensive immigration reform may not be that far off and would likely be a welcome change for the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants in America.

Immigration reform has slowly crept up President Obama’s to-do list, and it looks like something might get done this year, according to Los Angeles News Today. Reform was last undertaken in 2007 when a proposal was passed by the House but was defeated in the Senate.

However, some immigration advocates feel that the Obama administration is only doing the bare-minimum to appease Latino voters before this year’s mid-term elections, reports the Los Angeles Times.

“The critical ingredient for whether we get immigration reform done this year will be whether the president has the courage to step forward and lead,” Deepak Bhargava, executive director of the Center for Community Change, told the news source.

The president’s has been forced to deal with a variety of concerns including the economy, job creation and healthcare reform, and these factors may have contributed to the delay in immigration reform.

Despite these problems, the government’s EB-5 visa program has been successful in helping foreigners obtain green cards. The program allows foreigners who have invested at least $1 million in a U.S. business to become eligible for a green card if that investment creates 10 jobs.
