Mississippi Public Safety Commissioner says enforcing immigration law would be costlyStephen Simpson, Mississippi's Public Safety Commissioner, recently said that a new immigration enforcement law allowing state authorities to demand proof of citizenship would be costly, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.

According to the news provider, the law would allow enforcement officers to demand the citizenship proof from drivers who have been stopped for traffic violations.

Simpson said that the legislation would require the Public Safety Commission to hire 11 experts, costing $1.2 million a year. These experts would be needed to examine the immigration documents to determine whether or not they are valid, Simpson told members of the Senate Judiciary A Committee recently.

In addition, local sheriffs would then have to pay to house the illegal immigrants and move them to the closest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility, which is located in Louisiana, according to the commissioner.

Foreign nationals looking to obtain U.S. green card eligibility regardless of potential new immigration laws can do so through the federal EB-5 visa program. By utilizing this program, foreigners can obtain such eligibility by making an investment of $1 million (or $500,000 in some areas) in an American company or project that creates or maintains at least 10 full-time jobs.
